Common Causes of Roof Leaks

10% OFF Roof Protection

One of the most common causes of roof leaks is improper installation or maintenance of the flashing. Flashing is the material used to seal the joints between the roofing materials and the chimney, dormers, vents, skylights, and other protrusions. If the flashing is not installed correctly or if it deteriorates over time, it can create gaps that allow water to enter the home. Asphalt shingles are also susceptible to wind damage, particularly during severe storms. The wind can lift the shingles and cause them to crack or break, leaving your home vulnerable to water intrusion. Shingle damage can also be caused by falling tree limbs or other debris.

If your home has a flat roof, ponding water can be a major problem. Ponding water is when water accumulates on the roof and does not drain properly. This can happen if the gutters are clogged or if there is a problem with the drainage system. Ponding water can cause the roofing materials to deteriorate and can lead to leaks. Ice dams are another common cause of roof leaks. Ice dams form when the edge of the roof is significantly colder than the rest of the roof. This causes snow and ice to melt and then refreeze at the edge of the roof, creating a dam. As more snow and ice melt, they back up behind the dam and eventually leak into the home.
